Welcome to our Clinic!

Seventh Generation Midwives Toronto (SGMT) would to acknowledge that the land our clinic stands on is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Toronto (Tkaronto) is now the home of many indigenous peoples and communities including First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and many more across Turtle Island and beyond, many of whom receive midwifery care at our clinic. All of us at SGMT aim to create a safe and healing space for everyone.

Seventh Generation Midwives Toronto (SGMT) had many homes before it found its permanent residence at 525 Dundas St E in 2013. Back in the early 2000’s, there were no Indigenous-led midwifery clinics in Toronto, that is until four midwives, Sara Wolfe, Sara Booth, Cheryllee Bourgeois and Ellen Blais came together to launch the start of SGMT in 2005. Their goal in creating the clinic was to increase access to midwifery care for Indigenous people, and to create a safe space where Indigenous folks could obtain culturally sensitive healthcare, where they could freely integrate cultural traditions into birth practices. This was a very personal task for Sara W, Cheryllee and Ellen, as they came from their own Indigenous communities and knew first hand how necessary places like SGMT were. Inspired by the first gathering of Indigenous Midwives in 2002, which was held at the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, the four embarked on a journey to open SGMT, which led them to one day open Toronto’s first birthing centre; the Toronto Birth Centre. The ties between SGMT and the TBC are strong. SGMT’s old location on Grace St lacked the space for births that their clients were looking for, so when the founders had the opportunity to launch the Toronto Birth Centre as an Indigenous-led birthing centre, it made perfect sense for SGMT to make the move to the other side of the city where the TBC was in development and where it has stayed ever since.
