Masking Update
November 2025
In line with Ontario Ministry of Health recommendations, Sunnybrook Hospital and Toronto Birth Centre policies; SGMT is continuing to follow local safety measures to slow the spread of infectious diseases such as RSV, COVID-19 and influenza.
All staff, clients and other visitors are required to wear a medical mask during the entirety of their time in the building. If this proposes a challenge for you, please speak to your midwife PRIOR to your next appointment.
As always, no one should enter the building who is exhibiting symptoms of illness, including but not limited to fever and/or vomiting within the previous 24 hours. If you are sick and/or exhibiting symptoms on the day of your appointment please call the clinic in the morning so that we can arrange for your appointment to be via phone call and your midwife will discuss next steps with you if necessary
The measures we are taking are in the interest of our staff, our clients and their families. If you have any concerns or questions about how they may impact you, please email our SGMT partners at midwife@sgmt.ca, or call our front desk at 416.530.7468. Rude or aggressive behaviour towards our staff will not be tolerated.
Note from the Society of Obstretricians & Gynaecologists of Canada on the Use of Acetaminophen in Pregnancy
September 2025
SOGC president Dr. Lynn Murphy-Kaulbeck talks to the Globe and Mail about the need to address patient concerns following the recent U.S. health advisory shift on Tylenol use during pregnancy. The article reports on the SOGC’s position statement, which reaffirms the safety of acetaminophen use during pregnancy.
The SOGC emphasizes that acetaminophen remains a safe and appropriate option for managing fever and pain during pregnancy when used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary time. The SOGC revisited the scientific evidence amid reports of shifting medical advice in the U.S. and reasserted that current evidence does not establish a causal connection between acetaminophen and autism.

Masking Update
May 2024
Along with Ministry and Toronto Birth Centre guidelines, we no longer require masks to be worn in the building or during appointments; however, masks remain available on site for all staff and visitors. If you would prefer your midwife and members of your health care team to be masked during your encounters please let us know.
With this change, we ask that staff and visitors make an individual choice about wearing a mask. Although the requirement is no longer in place, we would like to remind people that our communities include people who are at higher risk if they get sick and that is why SGMT encourages wearing a mask to reduce disease transmission. We must also respect the decisions of others, whether they have chosen to mask or not.
We would also like to remind everyone that you still need to stay out of the clinic if you are sick or symptomatic, and to follow public health advice about when/how to reduce infection spread after the onset of illness. A good page about this is: https://www.toronto.ca/community-people/health-wellness-care/health-programs-advice/respirat ory-viruses/covid-19/covid-19-what-you-should-do/covid-19-what-to-do-if-you-have-covid-19-s ymptoms/
It has been 4 years since the outbreak of Covid-19. We understand this transition will take time and may be difficult and triggering. If you need support with this change, please do not hesitate to reach out to SGMT leadership or any other support person you have. Finally, it is important to remind you that this policy is subject to change according to Ontario public health directives.
